Back of House with Rob Hill

Get acquainted with the human-side of FoodStorm as we sit down for monthly interviews with the people who power our business.

Rob Hill, CEO of FoodStorm, spends his days leading the strategic direction and growth of the organization and oversees the day-to-day operational functions. Rob has extensive experience leading the growth of Software-as-a-Service businesses, is a graduate of Swinburne University of Technology’s Bachelor of Information Technology scholarship program, and an alumni of Harvard Business School.

1) What do you enjoy most about working at FoodStorm?

At FoodStorm it’s exciting to be a relatively small business growing globally, while also having the opportunity to work with some of the biggest brands in the industry. We’re proud to be a family-owned business founded in Melbourne, now considered a global market leader in the catering software space.

While it is such an exciting time with our business growth, what I enjoy the most is seeing the positive impact the business can have on people.

From a customer perspective, it’s great to see a customer's eyes light up as they see the solution for the first time, hear how they have saved countless hours since using FoodStorm, or their excitement when they retell how they have improved their own customer experience using the solution they love.

Within our FoodStorm team, our company growth brings lots of opportunity for us all as we adapt to a constantly changing business environment (we have tripled our team size in just the past 18 months!). It's always rewarding to see our team members stretch themselves to learn new skills and deliver outstanding results for our clients. Every day the team inspires me to bring my A-game, too!

2) Where do you see the catering industry and catering technology going in the future?

From a technology perspective, 2020 changed the game; these days every caterer must have an online presence and a digital strategy to compete. The digital transformation hasn’t just been from a customer online ordering perspective; ensuring the end-to-end processes from ordering through to production and delivery is critical. Technology can ensure this is as efficient as possible.

After a challenging 2020 for many catering businesses, I’m optimistic that 2021 will be a great year. The catering market is resilient and the desire for people to come together and share experiences and food will always be there.

As people come back together they will want to celebrate with food. As workers return to offices, perks like corporate catering will be important to encourage the return, and technology to support that is even more critical.

In the events business, there is a lot of pent up demand and solutions like ours will help manage the large volumes expected for weddings, birthdays and major events.

Overall, I’m excited about the role technology can play in helping communities reconnect well into the future!

3) Tell us about your background that led to you joining the FoodStorm team:

I started my career in software development, before moving into leadership roles across software development, product management, business development and business leadership. As my career has progressed, I’ve had the opportunity to stretch myself into areas I never dreamed of, including studying at business school and traveling around the world.

I spent roughly 7 years living in New York helping an Aussie SaaS business grow in the US and later into Europe. It was during this time I met FoodStorm Co-Founder Anthony Super and I kept across the FoodStorm story as he and Miranda built the system from the ground up.  When I returned to Melbourne, Anthony asked me to join the team to lead our global growth, I of course couldn’t resist!

4) What are the values that drive you?

My passion as a leader is to lead by example while empowering my team and those around to deliver to the best of their ability for business success.

5) How would you describe FoodStorm in one word?

Incredible 😁

6) The best piece of advice I’ve been given was...

Make the most of every opportunity.

7) If you could invent a holiday, what would it definitely involve?

Beach, wildlife, adventure, relaxing and the great outdoors.

8) What’s your favourite way to spend time off?

Spending time with family (I have two young kids, a boy and a girl); swimming, running, and of course all of the holiday items above.

9) Cat-person or dog-person?

Dog person 🐶

10) What’s next on your bucket list?

Antarctica! It might be a while before I can make this a reality, but it would certainly be an amazing adventure!
