The State of Catering 2020

The State of Catering 2020

With 2020 in the rearview mirror, it's time to celebrate the innovation and resiliency of the catering industry over the past year and explore the trends that emerged. Check out the statistics below to help inform your own catering operations and help your business thrive. This data was collected during a 1-year period between January 1st, 2020 and December 21st, 2020 across multiple countries and gives an interesting insight into the state of catering today, which can be used to indicate future trends.

The catering industry is now reaching pre-pandemic ordering levels, showing a promising, positive trend into what 2021 may hold for catering businesses. Through the past 12 months, caterers have had to adapt and deliver to customers' ever-changing needs while remaining vigilant on patron and staff safety. The digitization of the global catering community has proven indispensable for those focused on capturing new and existing business.

The implementation of what we call the "2020 Caterers Technology Survival Kit," as seen below in the infographic, is now the new and proven baseline for how catering companies need to be operating in today's digital world. Some of the highlights include:

  • Abandoned carts feature capturing over AUD $75,000 in additional revenue for our customers
  • Some caterers integrating with social media marketplaces, such as Facebook and Instagram, seeing a +29% and +24% increase in orders on those platforms respectively
  • Reaffirmation that quality food and quality service don't go unnoticed, evident through the rise in average customer star rating from 4.5 in 2019 to 4.7 in 2020

Hats off to all the catering companies and teams around the world continuing to strive for excellence and provide meaning experiences for their communities!
