Gerald Wong, Senior Software Engineer, spends his days developing new features and tracking down difficult bugs in the FoodStorm system to ensure that FoodStorm is the world leader in catering software. This involves the “full stack” - from writing user interface code, to APIs and database queries, and software processes such as source control and code reviews.
There’s a magic formula that enables a small team to produce big results. It’s not just the processes and code, but intangible things like the close-knit-ness and posting memes.
The world is a changed place today because of the pandemic. People shifted to ordering online more often and this is where we leverage technology. Catering technology is not just for ordering but includes the whole process including delivery to the customer. Today we take for granted that we can track deliveries through GPS in real time, something that wasn’t so common just a few years ago. There are many opportunities as technology develops and it is hard to predict what the next innovation will be. However as a tech company, we are in the best position to influence that direction.
When finishing university, I initially didn’t want to develop using Microsoft technologies because it was proprietary/closed source, however as a fresh graduate (and right after the GFC) you take whatever you can get - and I started my career developing in Microsoft technologies from the outset.. Since then, I learnt Microsoft does produce good software and has embraced open source, recently acquiring GitHub, but that is a topic for another blog. So I’ve been a .NET developer ever since, and joined FoodStorm not because of my .NET experience, but because of the culture.
Software has no limits. Whatever you can think of, you can put into code. So it is very powerful and can be used to improve everyone’s lives.

Living like a local day. I find that you can experience the culture better by doing everyday things like going to the local shops and taking public transport instead of going to tourist attractions.
Dog person! Dogs are always friendly and want to play with you. I recently got a Jack Russell puppy and they are so full of energy.
Mobius strip, because it’s cool to have some shape with weird physical properties.
I’m listening to a podcast called Darknet Diaries. It is a collection of stories about computer hacking and cyber security. It’s interesting to learn about what happens on the “dark side” of the Internet, things that most people are unaware of yet could affect anyone.
